Barriers and drivers for increased energy efficiency

Dear all,

Since February I'm working in a research project at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden aiming to analyze the prerequisites and providing tools for implementing an energy management system according to standards like EN 16001 or upcoming ISO 50001 in a shipping company. The questions of why aren't more measures being implemented, and what the drivers and barriers for increased energy efficiency are naturally follows. So, I've been interviewing energy managers, operations managers, commanders etc. from a couple of Swedish shipping companies and compared their experiences to successful projects in other industries, where energy management systems are more common.

The first report is just finished, and being new in the field, I'd be happy for your feedback:

One of the main points is that there is a great lack of knowledge of current energy use, which makes understanding what measures are most cost-efficient to implement difficult, which in turn hinders investments. Shipping companies could greatly benefit from taking a more holistic and systematic approach to their work with energy efficiency.

Best,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,

I find the report quite interesting read, thanks for sharing with us!

I couldn't agree more with you on the point that the Shipping industry could benefit greatly from an holistic approach to energy management. I have not been following the development of ISO 50001 but find it quite interesting. I find this quite interesting thous because I've been working since for the last 8 to 10 year in developing and implementing Energy Management systems with built in decision support and I've also been managed implementing ISO 14001 system.

We at Marorka have been using a Deming (plan do check act) type cycle to as an approach to our energy management projects for various ship owners. I think that with the introduction of an ISO standard for energy management, many companies will see the obvious benefit of adding energy management to their already certified ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems.

Take care,
Kristinn
