US Navy buys into SkySails

cnet recently reported that the US Navy is chartering a kite-powered cargo ship to deliver equipment.

The savings are estimated to potentially reduce fuel costs by 20 percent to 30 percent, or roughly $1,600 a day per ship.

Canal shipping makes comeback in NY

This paragraph in the NY Times caught my eye:

The canal still remains the most fuel-efficient way to ship goods between the East Coast and the upper Midwest. One gallon of diesel pulls one ton of cargo 59 miles by truck, 202 miles by train and 514 miles by canal barge, Ms. Mantello said. A single barge can carry 3,000 tons, enough to replace 100 trucks.

Short-sea shipping could solve the US traffic problem

Portworld: The US-based Institute for Global Maritime Studies has written a report entitled How Coastal Shipping Could Reduce Traffic Congestion, Lower Pollution, and Bolster National Security. It explores the potential for coastal shipping as part of the United States' transportation network.
